BRAND

Each watch brand we feature has its own unique history, feel, and style. More than just names or logos, these brands are at the forefront of exceptional quality. They have the ability to summon passion and inspiration, while also conveying one’s sense of taste and status.

Before diving into what each brand offers, think first about what your intention is for the watch.

If you’re looking for something pragmatic and straightforward, you may want to explore watches with fewer complications and simpler designs.

Every Grail carries enough quality and craftsmanship to become a family heirloom. But consider what might have the most meaning for your family across future generations. Is your heirloom only for special formal occasions? Or are you passing down something built to withstand adventure?

Market savvy buyers with an eye toward reselling will benefit most by seeking out brands known to increase in value over time. Our Watch Value Development page is an excellent resource for information on market trends and resale values.

Case Style

Case style preference comes down to a mix of personal comfort and design. With a wide array of shapes and materials to choose from, there’s no shortage of options available. Stainless steel cases are known for being anti-corrosive and more resistant to significant external damage.

Ceramic cases tend to be more lightweight with strong protection against surface level scratches. Titanium is another quality, common case material that stands apart due to its combination of tenacity and elegance.

COMPLICATIONS

At its essence, a watch is there to tell you the time. Any feature beyond that, such as a date display or chronograph, is known as a complication. Most complications serve a practical purpose, such as displaying a dual time zone, but there are high-quality options for any preference.

If a bevy of complications is your thing, keep an eye out for Grail selections that include alarms, calendar-based moon phases, increasingly sought after tourbillons, and other features of varying practicality and elegance.

WHAT MAKES THEM TICK

MOVEMENT

Quite literally the engine of tracking time, the movement behind a watch is what makes it tick. There are two types of movement you’ll encounter when hunting for your next Grail: quartz and mechanical. Both offer different experiences in terms of performance precision and cost of upkeep.

Known and loved for its accuracy and dependability, quartz movement typically requires less maintenance because it is powered by a battery. Quartz batteries need to be changed periodically, which is covered by the Watch Gang Warranty.

By contrast, a “mechanical movement”, also known as manual or automatic movement, can be more appealing to connoisseurs and collectors. Watchmakers have fine-tuned and enhanced these mechanical movements for centuries, making these among the most highly-prized Grails in our collection.

BUYER BEWARE

HOW TO DETECT A FAKE WATCH

All watches in Watch Gang subscriptions and the Grail Store are verified Certified for authenticity and backed by the Watch Gang 2 Year Warranty. Unfortunately not everyone can make the same guarantee. Counterfeit designer watches have become more convincing over the years, but a few simple tips can help ensure that you don’t ever make a purchasing mistake.

A Rolex, for example, is one of the designer brands most likely to be imitated. One key Rolex feature is that it does not make the same noticeably audible ticks that many other watches do. This is in large part because of the hundreds of tiny, intricately designed moving parts inside of it. Hold the watch close to your ear, and if there is a noticeable tick, it’s likely a fake.

Other general signs of possible fakery include watches with muddled engravings or misspelled words, obvious scratches, askew or off-center logos, and faulty clasps. Even more obvious would be a watch that simply doesn’t keep time very well from the outset.

The weight of the watch is another good litmus test, as real designer watches tend to feel heavier than they look. High value metals and materials tend to weigh more, and the sheer quantity of mechanical parts in a designer watch adds to the heft of it. A counterfeit model will feel lighter than it should. To make sure that your designer watch is legitimate, take care to purchase only from Watch Gang or other reputable, authorized sellers.
